CHAPTER 11

We had two hours before Harry West’s driver was due to show up at Chloe’s apartment to take her to the dinner in Richmond. Oblix took her home, as she said she needed some privacy to ‘make some calls.’

The Enforcer was engrossed in a laptop, deep in intelligence mode, researching the location of the dinner. It turns out it was a private property; a mansion just outside of Richmond, which probably belonged to Shephard himself.

Sinclair politely asked Chloe if he could ride with us to Richmond, explaining he would visit a friend and wait for us once we were done. The plan was to use Marcheline’s glamor to disguise himself once we arrived at the mansion. I’d attempt to get close enough to Lord Seth to read his mind and find out where Sandy was, and the Enforcer would sneak around and get her back while we distracted him.

It was an enormous task. Sinclair was doing everything he could to plan for battle. Despite being cut off from his normal avenues of information, he seemed to be surprisingly good at finding out exactly what he needed. Now, he was studying blueprints of the old mansion, and accessing staff files of the employees through the third-party recruitment agency, and familiarizing himself with everything from the caterer’s menu to where each bathroom was located.

Bridget and Marcheline huddled around Damon’s body, debating methods of speeding up his healing. My old friend Phoebe, although relatively useless with practical things, had a few tips on long-lost hearth-witch magic that Marcheline was able to use to concoct a more powerful healing salve. She applied it to Damon’s forehead gently, brushing the bloodied hair away.

I watched her warily. Her energy was scattered, her composure badly shaken.

Dexter insisted on bouncing on my knee. It was both irritating and annoying, and quite adorable at the same time. “Horsey ride, Evil Mama!” He crowed, jostling around wildly while I jiggled my leg up and down. “Wheeee!”

“The real horsey will be back soon,” I told him. “Oblix will be babysitting you this evening.” In between the centaur and the demon familiar—who was currently licking his private parts in a sunny patch near the window—Dexter should be safe tonight.

Prue was furious with me for talking Chloe into going to the fundraiser to confront her father, but I waved her concerns away. “You underestimate her,” I said. “You saw how she poisoned those werewolves at the hospital.”

“She definitely did not do that on purpose, and you know it.” Prue grumbled. “Chloe is an innocent soul. I’ve spent my life trying to keep people from hurting her, and now, we’re pointing her right towards the most dangerous thing in her life—her father—and telling her to bark at him like an outraged puppy.”

“Again, you underestimate her. She’s her father’s daughter. She was raised in a den of vipers. I’m sure some of her parent’s conniving and intelligence has rubbed off on her.”

“You’re talking about a girl who needed me to help her pull a tampon applicator out of her vagina because she couldn’t get it out.
